Served in Vietnam
1967 – 1969

My husband, Brian, was walking “point” in a patrol of soldiers in Vietnam one day. The enemy threw a grenade at him. He didn’t realize what had happened at first. He was covered in shrapnel and his legs and back hurt badly. He was dusted off, a helicopter was sent for and they flew him to Saigon. He was in Saigon recovering for about 7 weeks from shrapnel wounds in his legs and back, he then was sent back to his unit.

When he had walked with his patrol before, he was wearing a backpack that contained a canned ham that his mother had sent him in a “care package.” When he returned to his unit, his buddies couldn’t wait to tell him about the canned ham. “After you left, we looked in what was left of your backpack, and the canned ham you had in there had so much shrapnel in it! The canned ham took the brunt of the attack! Man, if you hadn’t had that in there, you would have been a goner,” they told him.

Brian thought of his mother at that moment as his eyes started getting misty and whispered, “Thank you, Mom, for saving my life!”
