It was in the summer of 1992, and I was an Alarm Response Team Leader as a U.S. Air Force Security Policeman outside of Ellsworth Air Force Base, S.D. I was working the night shift, when we received an alarm for one of the priority resources we were responsible for. When we arrived at the site, even though it was pitch dark we immediately noticed that the fence had been knocked down, and not too far away we could hear somebody running away. As we went toward the directions of the footsteps, I could see somebody moving a couple dozen yards away. With loaded M-16s in hand, we started yelling at the person ahead, "Stop, Police, Get on the ground!" My team strategically maneuvered providing cover for one another as we approached the subject. As we got closer, we realized why the subject hadn't listened to our previous demands. One of the local farmer's cows had somehow run into the fence and made its way onto the restricted area. Our night wasn't over just yet, because we still had to remove this beast from the area. And how do you think we got this cow off the property? We just told it to moooooooove!
