I’m starting my 30th year on the railroad. I have worked for the Penn Central, Conrail and Norfolk Southern.

Before joining the railroad, I spent nine years in the Marine Corps with three tours of duty in Vietnam…1967, 1968 and 1969. I served as a grunt, door gunner, marine barracks in Hawaii, aviation supply clerk in Okinawa, Japan, and accounting and warehouse supervisor at Cherry Point, N.C.

I enlisted in the Army National Guard in September 1975. I was called to active duty in October 1990 in Lebanon, Pa., for Operation Desert Shield/Storm. I was assistant platoon sergeant and truck driver for the 2nd Platoon 131st Transportation Company out of Williamstown, Pa. We assisted in the needs to get the job done in the best and safest way possible. Our trucks hauled anything including ammo, missiles, small-round ammo, water, food, all types of equipment, troops and prisoners. Most important were ammo, food and mail.

Saudi Arabia - 1990

I returned home in June 1991, and was back at work for the railroad in July. In February 1992, I retired from the military with 27½ years of service. I’m looking forward to retiring from NS in a few years.

t was an honor to be part of the military to protect the honor and way of life for the people of the United States of America. When I can retire from the railroad that will be my next achievement and honor – to have been able to work for the railroad industry.
