James C. Hess
Equipment Operator
Croxton, N.J.

James Hess was awarded a Bronze Star Medal for bravery and a Purple Heart for service in Vietnam. His citation reads:

"Pfc. Hess distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on June 4, 1969, while serving as a rifleman with Company A, 2nd Battalion (Airmobile), 5th Cavalry during a reconnaissance mission in Tay Ninh Province, Republic of Vietnam. When his unit made contact with a well-fortified enemy force, Pfc. Hess moved forward to accurately engage the hostile emplacements. As he rose to throw a grenade at an enemy bunker he was wounded. Disregarding his painful wound, Pfc. Hess remained in the forward position directing the fires of fellow soldiers. His display of personal bravery is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army."
